Akwaaba means welcome in the local language of Twi here in Ghana. As we continue to get settled into our new home, we've picked up a few interesting facts to share:
1) Meda ase means thank you
2) The word Ghana means Warrior King
3) When something is no longer available to order at a restaurant, "it is finished". We find that many things are finished at certain places if you don't get there early enough!
4) Taxi drivers honk at you up and down the street letting you know they are available if you want a ride
5) Most items are carried atop the head while walking around, as opposed to carrying them over the shoulder or in one's arms
6) The local currency is called cedi (pronounced 'CD') and coins are pesewas
7) The current exchange rate is about $1 USD = 1.47 Cedi
8) Local dishes consist mainly of starches such as fufu (made from cassava or yams ) and meat, usually chicken or fish which is traditionally eaten with the right hand (the left hand is considered the toilet hand)
9) The northern region of the country is the poorest, more than 40% are below the poverty line, Accra is in the south along the coast
10) Small buses (what we knew as matatus in Nairobi) are called tro tros
